合同当事人一方违反合同时向对方支付的赔偿金额。我国民法通则、经济合同法均对违约金有专门规定。如规定当事人一方违反经济合同时，应向对方支付违约金；如果由于违约已给对方造成的损失超过违约金的，还应进行赔偿。
