戏曲的主要剧种。流行地区很广。清代中叶由徽汉等剧种进入北京后演变而成。表演上唱、念、做、打并重。唱腔以西皮、二黄为主，故又名皮黄戏。

1. 谓繁重的事务。京，大；剧，繁多。

   唐 李颀 《望鸣皋山白云寄洛阳卢主簿》诗：“故人吏京剧，每事多閒放。” 唐 刘长卿 《洛阳主簿叔知和驿承恩赴选伏辞》诗：“一从理京剧，万事皆容易。”

2. 亦称“ 京戏 ”。流行全国的戏曲剧种之一。

   清 乾隆 末期四大徽班进 北京 后，于 嘉庆 、 道光 年间同来自 湖北 的汉调艺人合作，相互影响，接受了昆曲、秦腔的部分剧目、曲调和表演方法，并吸收了一些民间曲调，逐渐融合发展而成。腔调以西皮、二黄为主，用胡琴和锣鼓等伴奏。
