落叶木质藤本。其果实入中药。有滋肾、敛肺、生津、收汗、涩精的功用。可治肺虚喘咳、口干作渴、自汗、盗汗、梦遗滑精、久泻久痢、神经衰弱等。

1. 中药名。因具五味而得名。

   明 李时珍 《本草纲目·草七·五味子》﹝释名﹞引 苏恭 曰：：“五味，皮肉甘、酸，核中辛、苦，都有咸味，此则五味具也。”

2. 有南五味和北五味之分。南产者色红，北产者色黑。以果实入药，主治肺虚咳喘、盗汗、遗精等。
