急性传染病，病原体是疟原虫，由蚊子传播，周期性发作。症状是发冷发热，热后大量出汗，头痛，口渴，全身无力。有的地区叫冷热病。

1. 以疟蚊为媒介，由疟原虫引起的周期性发作的急性传染病。

   《礼记·月令》：“﹝孟秋之月﹞寒热不节，民多疟疾。” 郑玄 注：“疟疾，寒热所为也。”《水浒传》第二三回：“今欲正要回乡去寻哥哥，不想染患疟疾，不能够动身回去。” 叶君健 《自由》一：“他们身上的鸡皮疙瘩在加厚，连他们的骨头都哆嗦起来，像疟疾正在发作。”

2. 指患疟疾。

   唐 杜甫 《寄彭州高使君适虢州岑长史参三十韵》：“三年犹疟疾，一鬼不销亡。”《花月痕》第四八回：“忽一日老苍头 贾忠 回説，外有老道姑，带一美女子，説是要见二位夫人。适值 红卿 疟疾， 采秋 与 瑶华 只得接入。”

3. 虐疾。犹暴疾。

   《左传·襄公七年》：“ 子駟 使贼夜弑 僖公 ，而以疟疾赴于诸侯。” 杨伯峻 注：“ 俞樾 《平议》谓‘疟疾’古本止作‘虐疾’，《书·金滕》‘遘厉虐疾’，犹言暴疾。弑之而以暴疾赴，於情事为近。”
