发生在热带海洋上的各类强度不同的气旋性涡旋。是热带低压、热带风暴、台风或飓风的总称。由洋面上局部聚积的湿热空气大规模上升至高空，周围低层空气趁势流向中心，在地球自转偏向力的作用下形成。直径一般几百千米，最大可达1000千米以上。是一种灾害性天气。国际上常以其近中心最大风力7级以下者称为热带低压，8～11级称为热带风暴，12级及以上者称为台风或飓风。
