1. 异事，怪事。

   《敦煌变文集·妙法莲华经讲经文》：“今朝採果来迟，只为逢於差事。” 宋 刘克庄 《跋灌园苏翁事迹》：“弓旌所至，巖穴一空。 苏翁 为当轴，故人乃深自晦匿，如此方知 巢 、 由 不为差事。”

2. 口语。不合标准，不中用。如：这东西可太差事了，怎么一碰就破了。

3. 被差遣去做的事情，一般多指公务。

   《元代白话碑集录·平遥崇圣宫给文碑（一）》：“得此文状，除别行外，已将本宫并下院差事行下道司除免去讫。” 李準 《马小翠的故事》二：“负责开会的县教育科长知道了，他批评 大焦山乡 的干部净胡闹，派个小妮子来应差事。”

4. 指官场中临时委派的职事。

   《儒林外史》第十回：“做穷翰林的人，只望几回差事。现今肥美的差都被别人钻谋去了。”《二十年目睹之怪现状》第三回：“ 苏州 差事甚少，不如 江寧 那边多。”

5. 泛指职位，工作。

   老舍 《蛤藻集·且说屋里》：“太太念佛吃斋，老老实实。大儿有很好的差事，长女上着大学。”
