战国时代周赧（nǎn）王欠了债，无法偿还，被债主逼得逃到一座宫殿的高台上。后人称此台为“逃债之台”（见于《汉书·诸侯王表序》及颜师古引服虔注）。后来就用“债台高筑”形容欠债极多。
