1.11世纪末到13世纪末罗马教皇、西欧封建主、大商人以夺回土耳其伊斯兰教徒占领的基督教圣地耶路撒冷为号召而组织的远征军。因参加者把基督教的十字架作为军徽，故名。

2.中世纪天主教会组成的军队。用以镇压各国人民反封建反天主教会的“异端”运动。

1. 本指十一世纪末到十三世纪末，罗马教皇和西欧的基督徒，为夺回被土耳其伊斯兰教徒占领的耶路撒冷，所号召组成的军队。因士兵皆以红十字章着于肩上，故称为「十字军」。后泛指任何经教会赞许、教宗核可，讨伐异教徒的军队；一般也引申指打击罪恶的团体。
