1. 即俗体字。旧时指通俗流行而字形不合规范的汉字，别于正体字而言。

2. 习用而无新意之字或不高雅之字。

   宋 严羽 《沧浪诗话·诗法》：“学诗先除五俗：一曰俗体，二曰俗意，三曰俗句，四曰俗字，五曰俗韵。” 郭绍虞 校释引 陶明濬 《诗说杂记》：“何谓俗字？风云月露，连类而及，毫无新意者是也。”《红楼梦》第七六回：“﹝‘凹’字﹞也不只 放翁 才用，古人中用者太多。如《青苔赋》……不可胜举，只是今日不知，悮作俗字用了。”
