君主时代宫廷内侍奉帝王及其家属的人员，由阉割后的男子充任。也叫太监。

1. 古代以阉割后失去男性功能之人在宫中侍奉皇帝及其家族，称为宦官。史书上也称阉(奄)人、奄寺、阉宦、宦者、中官、内官、内臣、内侍、内监等。宦官本为内廷执役的奴仆，不能干预外政，但因与皇室接近而关系密切，故历史上常造成奄宦专权的局面。

   《汉书·惠帝纪》：“宦官尚食比郎中。” 颜师古 注引 应劭 曰：“宦官，奄寺也。” 宋 王安石 《本朝百年无事札子》：“本朝累世因循末俗之弊，而无亲友群臣之议。人君朝夕与处，不过宦官女子。” 清 赵翼 《廿二史札记》卷五：“ 东汉 及 唐 明 三代，宦官之祸最烈。”

2. 做官的人。
