1. 海动。谓海动风起。

2. 指海洋潮汐现象。

   北魏 郦道元 《水经注·温水》：“ 扶南 去 林邑 四千里，水步道通……自 船官 下注 大浦 之 东湖 ，大水连行。潮上西流，潮水日夜长七八尺。从此以西，朔望并潮，一上七日，水长丈六七。七日之后，日夜分为再潮，水长一二尺。春夏秋冬，厉然一限。高下定度，水无盈缩，是为海运，亦曰象水也。”

3. 古代特指由海道运粮至京师。

   《元史·食货志五》：“海运， 元 自 世祖 用 伯颜 之言，岁漕东南粟，由海道以给京师。” 明 陶宗仪 《辍耕录·海运》：“国朝海运粮储，自 朱清 张瑄 始，以为古来未尝有此。按 杠工部 《出塞》云：‘ 渔阳 豪侠地，击鼓吹笙竽。云帆转 辽海 ，稉稻来东 吴 。’……如此，则 唐 时已有海运矣。” 郑观应 《盛世危言·铁路》：“自河运改行海运以来，轮舶往还费省而效捷。”

4. 今泛指海上的运输。
