画在建筑物墙壁或天花板上的画。是历史最悠久的绘画形式之一。有石窟壁画、寺观壁画、宫廷壁画、墓室壁画等多种。可以表现特定的题材，也可以只起装饰作用。

1. 绘在壁上的画。原始社会人类在洞壁上刻画各种图形，以记事表情，是最早的壁画。据历史记载， 汉武帝 画诸神像于 甘泉宫 ， 宣帝 图功臣像于 麒麟阁 ，也都是壁画。自 魏 晋 到 唐 宋 ，佛道两教盛行，寺院道观多有壁画。
