以民间传统文化、风俗习惯等为研究对象的学科。1846年由英国学者托马斯提出。中国民俗学开始主要研究民谣，以后扩大到民间文艺以外的民俗研究，包括饮食服饰、住宅器具、岁时风俗、婚丧嫁娶、宗教礼仪等。
