时代名。从公元420年东晋灭亡到589年隋统一的一百七十年间，中国历史上形成南北对峙的局面，称为南北朝。南朝从420年刘裕代晋到589年陈灭亡，经历宋、齐、梁、陈四代。北朝从439年北魏统一北方开始，到534年分裂为东魏、西魏。不久，东魏、西魏又分别被北齐、北周取代。577年，北周灭北齐，统一北方。581年北周为隋所代。589年，隋灭陈，南北朝时期结束。
