用相同或相近的语音翻译另一种语言的词语。如用“沙发”翻译英语词“sofa”。与“意译”相对。

1. 犹消息；情报。

   《宋书·黄回传》：“及 景素 结逆，履霜岁久，乃密通音译，潜送器仗。”

2. 把一种语言的语词用另一种语言中与它发音相同或近似的语音表示出来。

   鲁迅 《热风·不懂的音译》：“翻外国人的姓名用音译，原是一件极正当，极平常的事。”
