抗日战争时期中国共产党领导的人民军队。抗日民族统一战线建立后，根据同国民党达成的协议，1937年8月红军主力部队改编为国民革命军第八路军（也叫第十八集团军），朱德任总司令，彭德怀任副总司令，辖第一一五师、第一二○师、第一二九师三个师。改编后开赴抗日前线，创建了晋绥、晋察冀、晋冀鲁豫、山东等敌后抗日民主根据地，粉碎了日伪军的多次进攻和“扫荡”，打退了国民党顽固派多次进攻，消灭了大量敌人。1945年8月八路军和新四军及其他人民武装一起举行了大反攻，取得了抗日战争的最后胜利，为中国人民建立了伟大的历史功绩。这时，八路军发展到一百余万人。
