春秋时，大国的军队分为中军、上军、下军（也有称中军、左军、右军的），后泛指军队。现指陆军、海军、空军。

1. 周 制，诸侯大国三军。中军最尊，上军次之，下军又次之。一军一万二千五百人，三军合三万七千五百人。

   《周礼·夏官·司马》：“凡制军，万有二千五百人为军。王六军，大国三军，次国二军，小国一军。”

2. 军队的通称。

   《论语·子罕》：“三军可夺帅也，匹夫不可夺志也。”《汉书·灌夫传》：“ 魏其 言 灌夫 父死事，身荷戟驰不测之 吴 军，身被数十创，名冠三军。” 唐 章孝标 《淮南李相公绅席上赋春雪》诗：“朱门到晓难盈尺，尽是三军喜气消。”《说唐》第一回：“﹝ 晋王 ﹞将宫内之物，给赏三军，班师回朝。” 毛泽东 《长征》诗：“更喜 岷山 千里雪，三军过后尽开颜。”

3. 古代指步、车、骑三军。

   《六韬·战车》：“步贵知变动，车贵知地形，骑贵知别径、奇道，三军同名而异用。”今亦称海、陆、空军为三军。

4. 三围。

   《管子·参患》：“故凡用兵之计，三惊当一至，三至当一军，三军当一战。” 陶鸿庆 《读诸子札记·管子二》：“‘军’之本义为‘围’，后世遂为师旅之通名……‘三军当一战’者，言三围当一战也。”
