俗称扁桃腺。机体中较大的淋巴腺组织。通常指位于咽喉两侧的一双腭扁桃体。能产生淋巴细胞，吞噬细菌，有保护机体的作用。

1. 人和两栖类以上动物，鼻后孔的顶壁或咽与口腔、鼻腔交界处粘膜下淋巴组织所集成的团块的通称。在人体，依所占部位的不同，有腭扁桃体、咽扁桃体和舌扁桃体等。腭扁桃体即一般所说的扁桃腺，位于咽峡的侧壁，舌腭弓和咽腭弓之间。呈扁卵圆形，表面盖着粘膜上皮，底面包着纤维被膜，与咽壁的肌层联系很松，容易分离。腭扁桃体是一种防御装置，易发生炎症，可能成为带菌病灶，严重的应予摘除。咽扁桃体位于鼻咽部后壁，有病变时亦宜予以刮除。舌扁桃体位于舌背的后部，其临床意义不大。
