1. 梵文Naraka的意译，意为“苦的世界”。处于地下，有八寒、八热、无间等名目。古 印度 传说人在生前做了坏事，死后要堕入地狱，受种种苦。佛教也采用此说。

   《宋书·夷蛮传·天竺迦毗黎国》：“且要天堂以就善，曷若服义而蹈道；惧地狱以敕身，孰与从理以端心。” 清 纪昀 《阅微草堂笔记·滦阳消夏录四》：“昔 五臺山 一僧，夜恒梦至地狱。” 茹志鹃 《失去的夜》一：“ 也宝 睁大了眼，她怕，她觉得恐怖，她想起人们常说的十八层地狱，其中有一层是上刀山下油锅。”

2. 与天堂相对。本为希伯来文，后基督教转意译为地狱。犹太教经典中原意为“阴间”，仅指死者灵魂的去处，并不涉及赏罚问题；后为基督教人转其意而用之，指不信仰耶稣基督的人灵魂于末日审判后受永刑的地方。中国近代史资料丛刊《太平天囯·天情道理书》：“堪嘉弟妹立纲常，全敬神爷姓字扬，自此无忧罹地狱，自然永远在天堂。”

3. 比喻险恶悲惨的境地。

   《三国志·魏志·蒋济传》：“贼据西岸，列船上流，而兵入洲中，是为自内地狱，危亡之道也。” 冯雪峰 《上饶集中营》第一部：“这是暗无天日的活地狱！” 曹禺 《原野》序幕：“他眼里闪出凶狠，狡恶，机诈与嫉恨，是个刚从地狱里逃出来的人。”
