1. 首位，魁首。

2. 谓位次较尊的一边，通常指左手一边。

3. 佛家语。指一座大众中的主位。

   《观无量寿佛经》：“佛在 王舍城 耆闍崛山 中，与大比丘众千二百五十俱，菩萨三万二千， 文殊师利 法王子而为上首。”后亦用指寺院中的首座。 南朝 梁武帝 《十喻诗·梦》：“出家为上首，入寺作梁栋。”《景德传灯录·灵祐禅师》：“ 华林 闻之，曰：‘某甲忝居上首， 祐公 何得住持？’” 章炳麟 《大乘佛教缘起考》：“综观佛在世时，有佛与外道上首对谈者，有外道上首为佛弟子説法者。”
