Meanings

Learners of English usually like learning vocabulary because words often generate clear meaning even when they are unsure of the grammar. A non-native speaker who goes into a cafe and says Coffee please will most likely succeed in obtaining a cup of coffee despite the fact he or she did not say Can I have a cup of coffee please?

我们在学习英语的过程中，会把很多精力用在背单词上，那么为什么大家会如此重视词汇呢？因为，不管我们会不会使用语法，单词总是能够让我们传达出我们的意图。比如说，在咖啡店里，虽然我们不能完整的说出‘Can I have a cup of coffee please?’，但只要我们能说出“coffee please”，就能买到一杯咖啡。

However, while words are powerful and useful units of meaning, they can sometimes be problematic. Many words have more than one meaning and sometimes defining exactly what a word means can be complex.

然而，虽然单词非常有用，但有时也会给我们带来一些问题。因为很多单词不只有一个意思，想确定这个单词究竟是什么意思挺难的。

Words and dictionaries

When we come across words that we do not know the meaning of, we often look in dictionaries to find out the meaning. Dictionaries can be a useful source of information about words for native speakers and learners of English.

看到不认识的单词，我们通常会去查字典。无论对于当地人还是外语学习者，字典都非常有用。

Look at the following dictionary entry to see what information it can provide about words apart from the meaning. 

看看下面这个词条，除了单词的意思，字典还提供了那鞋信息？

字典可以提供的有用信息：

2  词性 （是否可数）

3. 详细定义

4. 举例

5. 词组

6. 介词搭配

想一想，这些是不是正是大家不会的内容？原来他们都在字典里，下次再查单词，不要只看中文意思就完事儿了。

While you might have a reasonably good understanding of words in English, using a dictionary can provide you with a deeper knowledge of words and how they are used in spoken or written language or both. 

虽然你可能已经认识一个单词了，但是字典能够让你更加深入地理解这个单词，还能理解他们在口语写作中的用法。
